What the Nutritionist says
Supplements can act as a great insurance policy if you are constanty on the go and struggle to consume all of your recommended nutrient intakes, however they should not be used as a subtitute for a varied and balanced diet.
How It Helps
There is a clear association in research between vitamin D levels in our bodies and bone health. This is because vitamin D is known to aid absorption of calcium which is essential for strong and healthy bones.
A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled intervention study was carried out in order to investigate whether consumption of a dietary supplement containing probiotic bacteria plus vitamins and minerals over a period of at least 3 months in winter/spring affects the duration, frequency, and severity of symptoms of the common cold. The supplmeneted group showed improvement in all symptoms compared to the control. Theseå the theory that the gut microbiome has a profound effect on immune function.
A study measured dietary intakes of omega 3 via food records in 285 men and 130 women with coronary artery disease. During follow up, high proportions of n-3 fatty acids in serum lipids are associated with a substantially reduced risk of further complications.
B vitamins help transform the food you eat into energy that your cells can use. It also keeps your body's nerves and blood cells healthy and helps prevent a type of anemia that can make you weak and tired.
We now know that vitamin C might not prevent you catching colds and flus, however a high dose of vitamin C has been shown to help prevent the severity and duration of your cold. In one study, 168 volunteers were randomised to receive a placebo or a vitamin C supplement, two tablets daily, over a 60-day period between November and February. Compared with the placebo group, the active-treatment group had significantly fewer colds, fewer days challenged virally, and a significantly shorter duration of severe symptoms.
