How It Helps
Garlic is thought to support heart function in a variety of ways. Firstly, garlic has been shown in clinical trials to improve the elasticity of artery walls, while also decreasing LDL 'bad' cholesterol levels.
Hypercholesterolemia is associated with an increased risk of heart disease. The effect of garlic on blood lipids has been studied in numerous trials and summarized in meta-analyses. A meta analysis of 39 trials showed that garlic was effective at reducing LDL cholesterol in people with elevated cholesterol levels, and long term supplementation showed up to a 38% decrease in risk of coronary events too.
There is evidence that garlic acts as an immune booster by actively strengthening the host immune system within the tumor microenvironment against the immunosuppressive activity of an emerging tumor. Aged garlic extract was found to stimulate lymphocyte proliferation, macrophage phagocytosis, macrophage and lymphocyte infiltration into tumors, as well as the release of cytokines such as IL2, IL12, TNFα and IFNγ that suggests the induction of a Th1-type cellular immune response.
